We all know there’s no place like home, right? Living abroad is filled with so many exciting adventures and endless possibilities. Whether it is for school, your career, love to establish a new life or simply to explore the world, being abroad in a new culture and a new life can sometimes be overwhelming and stressful.
1. Keep busy and get into a routine
One of the worst possible things about moving to a new place is to be inundated with free time. Keep busy, go for a walk set out for an adventure and explore the city, join activities, start a language course and discover as many culturally new things as you can. Setting up a routine from the beginning will keep your mind busy, it’s a perfect way to help you adjust to your new environment.
2. Explore your surroundings
Often one of the major reasons we feel homesick is because of being in unfamiliar surroundings. A great idea is to prioritize your activities and to make time to explore your new city or your new country. There are so many options to choose from, go for a walk, volunteer with the local community or be a tourist and do some sightseeing. Make the most of all your time there!
3. Keep in touch
Don’t neglect your friends and family back home simply because you’ve moved to a new city or country. Keep in good contact with them, they miss you! Even if you choose a phone call, a WhatsApp group chat or a letter in the post, keeping in touch with your friends and family helps to close that gap and create the feeling of being more involved with things back home. Sometimes all you need is a quick phone call home when you’re feeling slightly homesick.
4. Focus on the positive
The best thing you can do is try and always be positive – no matter where you are. Whether you’re away from home for only a short time or plan to live there for years. Take a step back and enjoy where you are, there are so many things to be grateful for and your purpose of being where you are is one of them.
5. Meet new people
The best way to get to know a foreign place is to meet new people! Whether they’re local or in the same boat as you are, the more people you get to know, the easier it will be to have something to do and distract yourself from being homesick. Yes, we know stepping into a room full of people you don’t know can be scary, but you never know what kinds of friendships can be found outside your comfort zone.
