When we want to impress someone, we inevitably push out the best aspects of our personality. It turns out, completely in vain: research shows that demonstrating your vulnerability and weakness, on the contrary, increases the level of empathy for us from other people. So, the more non-critical flaws you have, the better people will treat you.
A professor who speaks to an audience and is visibly agitated seems to the audience smarter than someone who speaks with the utmost confidence. Being embarrassed and stupid the first time you meet is a proven, albeit not obvious, way to please your potential partner.
This theory was tested by psychologist Elliot Aronson. The test participants listened to the tapes of the people who answered the quiz. On some recordings, one of the participants was heard dropping a cup of coffee. Later, according to the results of the survey, the participants who spilled coffee were defined as the most attractive.
Practical application: want to be loved more? Don’t be scared to make mistakes and don’t hesitate to admit them. But go easy, there is no need to be overly clumsy.
